Not All Vapour Is Created Equal

Walk into any cannabis-friendly space in Europe and you will likely spot both: the sleek, pocket-sized vape pen with its pre-filled cartridge, and the chunkier dry-herb vaporiser with its ceramic bowl and temperature dial. They both produce vapour. They are both marketed as cleaner alternatives to smoking. But they are fundamentally different devices, and treating them as interchangeable can lead to real misunderstandings — about safety, about what you are actually consuming, and about how well the product serves you.

How a Vaporiser Actually Works

A cannabis vaporiser is, at its core, an electronically heated pipe. Instead of combusting plant material with a flame, it heats cannabis flower — or concentrate — to a temperature sufficient to release cannabinoids and terpenes as vapour, without triggering the chemical reactions that produce tar, carbon monoxide, and the dozens of other combustion by-products associated with smoking.

Within that broad category, there are two distinct heating mechanisms. Conduction vaporisers heat plant material directly through contact with the hot walls of the chamber. They tend to be simpler and cheaper but can produce uneven results — the material closest to the heat source vaporises faster than the rest. Convection vaporisers, by contrast, push hot air through the chamber, heating the material more evenly and generally producing cleaner, more consistent vapour. Most premium desktop and portable units use convection, and many experienced users consider it the superior method.

Temperature control matters here too. Different cannabinoids and terpenes vaporise at different temperatures — THC at around 157°C, CBD closer to 160–180°C, while many aromatic terpenes are lost above 200°C. Devices that allow users to dial in precise temperatures give considerably more control over the experience than those with fixed preset settings.

Importantly, the user loads the chamber themselves — with flower they have selected, sourced, and inspected. That transparency is not a minor detail.

The Vape Pen Is a Different Animal

Vape pens — often called vapeadores in Spanish-language cannabis culture — evolved from the e-cigarette industry. They use a resistance coil to heat a liquid solution, which is then inhaled as vapour. In the cannabis context, that solution is typically a cannabis oil or distillate, loaded either into a refillable tank or a pre-filled, disposable cartridge.

The appeal is obvious: they are discreet, odour-light, easy to use, and require no preparation. But their convenience comes with trade-offs that are worth understanding clearly.

The most significant issue is cartridge transparency. Unless a cartridge comes from a licensed, regulated producer with verified third-party lab testing, the consumer has very little certainty about what is actually inside. In unregulated markets — which still describe the majority of cannabis commerce across Europe — this is not a hypothetical concern. Investigations in several countries have found cartridges containing cutting agents such as vitamin E acetate (which was linked to the EVALI lung injury outbreak in 2019), synthetic cannabinoids, or simply inaccurately labelled THC concentrations.

The consumer who loads their own vaporiser with inspected flower knows exactly what they are heating. The consumer who buys a pre-filled cartridge from an unverified source does not.

Cartridge production also requires specialised industrial equipment, which means — outside of properly regulated markets — meaningful quality control is essentially impossible for small-scale producers. The economics push toward opacity.

What This Means for Harm Reduction

From a harm reduction perspective, both devices offer a genuine improvement over smoking. Eliminating combustion removes the most harmful elements of cannabis consumption. But they are not equivalent in the degree of control they afford the user.

A well-made convection vaporiser, used with known-quality flower, is arguably the most controllable inhalation method available to a cannabis consumer. A pre-filled cartridge of unknown provenance, by contrast, may be cleaner than a joint — or it may not be, depending entirely on what is in it.

For healthcare professionals advising patients, and for harm reduction organisations working with consumers, this distinction is material. Recommending "vaping" as a safer alternative to smoking is only a complete recommendation if it also specifies what kind of vaping, and with what level of supply chain confidence.

In Malta's developing cannabis framework, where the licensed non-profit CHRA model is specifically designed to provide members with traceable, quality-controlled cannabis, the case for dry-herb vaporisation over unverified cartridges is especially coherent. When the flower itself is sourced through a regulated channel, the vaporiser becomes part of a chain of accountability that pre-filled cartridges — at least outside a fully licensed commercial market — cannot replicate.

Choosing Wisely

For consumers weighing their options, a few practical points are worth keeping in mind. If you are using a vaporiser, choose a reputable manufacturer that specifies the materials used in its heating chamber — ceramic and medical-grade stainless steel are generally considered safe at high temperatures; some plastics are not. If you are using a vape pen, prioritise cartridges from verifiably licensed producers that publish lab results, and treat unbranded or cheaply sourced cartridges with appropriate scepticism.

The vapour may look the same. What produces it — and what is inside it — rarely is.
