The Sugar Supplement Debate
Walk into any grow circle — whether it's a balcony setup in Valletta or a tent grow somewhere in Catalonia — and sooner or later someone will mention molasses. The idea that adding sugar to your cannabis plants improves yield and bud quality has been circulating in home-growing communities for decades. But what is actually happening when you pour a spoonful of blackstrap into your watering can, and does it hold up to scrutiny?
Plants Already Make Their Own Sugar
The starting point for understanding sugar amendments is photosynthesis. Cannabis plants synthesise glucose using water, carbon dioxide, and light. That glucose fuels growth, powers cellular processes, and — crucially — feeds the microbial life living in the root zone. A healthy rhizosphere is teeming with bacteria and fungi that break down organic matter into plant-available nutrients. Sugar, in this context, is less a direct fertiliser and more a microbial food source.
This is where the logic of molasses supplements has its most defensible footing. By adding soluble carbohydrates to the growing medium, you are in theory feeding that microbial ecosystem rather than the plant directly. A more active microbial population is associated with better nutrient cycling, improved soil structure, and — in organic growing systems — greater availability of phosphorus and nitrogen at the root. The plant benefits downstream, not because it absorbs the sugar, but because its living soil becomes more productive.
Why Molasses, Not Honey?
Honey is the option growers most often reach for first, probably because it is already in the kitchen. It can work as a sugar source, but it is not the most practical choice. Honey is costly, highly processed compared to raw molasses, and its antimicrobial properties — the very qualities that keep it shelf-stable — can actually suppress the soil bacteria you are trying to encourage.
Blackstrap molasses, the dense residue left after sugar cane is refined, is the amendment most experienced growers prefer. It is cheap, widely available, and rich not only in sugars but in trace minerals including calcium, magnesium, and iron. Crucially, you want unsulphured molasses. Sulphur dioxide is added to some molasses as a preservative, and it is toxic to the very microorganisms you are trying to cultivate. Using sulphured molasses would be counterproductive — you would be sterilising the biology you set out to enrich.
The standard preparation is simple: two tablespoons of unsulphured blackstrap molasses dissolved in four litres of water, applied either as a root drench or — with care — as a foliar spray. Foliar application should be avoided on humid days, and plants should be gently shaken after spraying to prevent pooling on leaves.
Timing and the Flowering Window
Sugar amendments can technically be applied throughout the growth cycle, but most growers concentrate their use during the flowering stage. The reasoning is that this is when energy demand is highest, and when a thriving root-zone biology translates most visibly into flower development. Some growers stop applications in the final two weeks before harvest to avoid any residual taste or fermentation in the dried flower.
An advanced preparation involves combining molasses with composted bat guano — a phosphorus-rich amendment popular in organic growing. To make this "compost tea", water is left to sit for 24 hours to allow chlorine to off-gas, then a tablespoon each of pasteurised bat guano and unsulphured molasses are added, stirred well, aerated for a further 24 hours using an aquarium air pump, and then strained before use. The aeration step is important: it encourages aerobic bacterial growth rather than anaerobic fermentation, which can produce compounds harmful to roots.
The Risk of Overfeeding — and Uninvited Guests
As with any nutrient or amendment, excess causes problems. Too much sugar in the medium can fuel explosive microbial growth, including harmful pathogens and fungal infections. Fruit juices, sometimes suggested as an alternative sugar source, carry an additional risk: the pulp and natural yeasts can attract fungus gnats and other pests — a particular hazard in humid growing environments.
Experienced growers who use molasses regularly tend to pair it with biological protectants. Mycorrhizal fungi and Trichoderma species are the two most commonly mentioned. Mycorrhizae form symbiotic associations with plant roots, extending their effective surface area and improving uptake of phosphorus and water. Trichoderma, meanwhile, is a beneficial fungal genus that colonises the root zone aggressively and outcompetes harmful pathogens — including Fusarium, a destructive fungal infection that can devastate a crop. Trichoderma can be applied as a drench every two weeks through the first half of flowering as a preventative measure. Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) extract, used as a foliar spray, is another traditional antifungal companion with a long history in organic horticulture.
What It Cannot Do
It is worth being direct about the limits of this approach. Sugar amendments do not substitute for proper lighting, correct pH management, adequate macronutrients, or appropriate environmental controls. The gains — where they exist — are incremental improvements to an already well-managed grow. A plant under stress from poor conditions will not be rescued by molasses. And the science on direct sugar uptake by plants is clear: cannabis roots do not absorb complex sugars in any meaningful quantity. The benefit is indirect, mediated by microbial activity in the soil.
For growers working with living soil or no-till systems, where the microbial ecosystem is already central to the cultivation philosophy, sugar amendments fit naturally into the approach. For those growing in inert media with synthetic nutrient programmes, the rationale is much weaker — there is little microbial life present to feed.
In the end, molasses is a modest, low-cost tool with a reasonable biological basis — not a magic ingredient, but not folklore either. Used correctly, with clean inputs and appropriate biological companions, it is a legitimate part of the organic grower's toolkit.
